DAVE MUNSON, EL PRESIDENTE

It all started when I was living in Mexico and teaching English, simply needing a bag to carry my books in. I drew a bag and asked a man in a leather shop if he would make it for me. That kicked off a series of events I could not have foreseen in my wildest dreams. It grew into what is now Saddleback Leather Co. and eventually acquiring the production facility in Mexico, with the goal of making it the best factory anywhere. We have great people and great systems in place to do amazing things. If you have questions on how we can potentially help bring your designs to market, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

History of Mexican Culture

Leon is located in the state of Guanajuato and is the fifth largest city in Mexico. The city is a colonial town rich in culture and history and it is part of the region of Bajío.

This colonial city became known as the “Shoe Capital of the World”, due to its large production of quality leather goods and shoes for national and international markets. Without a doubt it is a great shopping destination, in addition to leather, continuous livestock and crop production for the rest of the country.

Leon’s strategic location in the center of Mexico links it to major cities and airports and, in addition to leather, it continues to produce agricultural products and livestock for the rest of the country.

Leon’s recent industrial growth has brought modern architecture, hotels, shopping centers and restaurants, and one of Mexico´s top ten convention centers, Poliforum Leon.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was established in 1994 lifting restrictions and eliminating tariffs on the trade of goods between Mexico, Canada and the United States. Consequently, trade has flourished in Mexico, and specifically in Leon, where Old Mexico Manufacturing is located.

What about Safety?

Don’t spend time on the border or south of Mexico City. Those are dangerous places. But we bring our own wives and children down to the factory all the time and have no concerns whatsoever.

Funny thing is, I’ve heard Mexicans say that there’s no way they’ll visit the United States because it’s so dangerous. “The prejudice people drag complete strangers behind cars and the gangs shoot them down at bus stops for no reason.” Or “I heard that in Detroit, they’d rather shoot you than look at you. And did you know that Phoenix, Arizona has the 2nd highest kidnapping rate in the world. There’s no way I’m going to America.” Leon is the equivalent of Omaha, Nebraska as far as safety goes, but way more fun.

And don’t forget, we know A LOT of great Mexican restaurants for when you get here.
